Cultural Celebrations People Actually Show Up For
Every year, the calendar hands your team a dozen chances to celebrate the cultures that make up your company.
And every year, most of them go the same way.
A graphic in the newsletter.
A themed lunch, if the budget allows.
A calendar invite that gets accepted, then quietly skipped.
The intent is good. The activation is missing.
The teams that get this right don't have bigger budgets. They have a bank of ideas ready to go, a clear format for each moment, and a plan that starts weeks before the month begins.
That's exactly what this guide gives you: a ready-to-use ideas bank of cultural celebration programming and heritage month activations, organized by month, format, budget, and team setup.
Start Here: Confetti's Free Cultural Planning Guide
We built the Cultural Planning guide so you never have to start from a blank page again.
It's a free, interactive resource with 174 cultural celebrations and programming ideas, organized across 12 ERGs. Open it, find the community or moment you're planning for, and walk away with ideas you can run this month.
Use it to:
- Plan the full year in one sitting instead of scrambling two days before a heritage month starts
- Hand ERG leads a starting point so they spend their volunteer hours on people, not brainstorming
- Give managers inspiration for small team moments, not just company-wide events
- Balance your calendar so every community gets a meaningful moment, not just the biggest months
Keep it open as you read. Everything below shows you how to turn those ideas into celebrations that land.
Inside the Guide: 174 Celebrations Across 12 ERGs

More Than a Calendar
Every ERG card also comes with tools for the people doing the planning:
- An approved collection a ready-to-book set of Confetti experiences matched to that community
- Recommended vendors (coming soon) nominate a vendor you love to be featured
- A community of ERG leaders join the waitlist for a WhatsApp group to swap ideas with peers
- Your voice in the guide suggest a new ERG or leave feedback right from the page
3 Smart Ways to Use It
- Co-host the overlaps. Some moments belong to more than one community. Black Women's History Month (April) appears under both the Black and Women's ERGs; Latina Equal Pay Day sits under Latinx/Hispanic and Women's. Co-hosting doubles your reach and your volunteers.
- Check before you book. Scan the 49 Interfaith/Multifaith holidays before you schedule an all-hands, offsite, or team lunch.
- Fill the quiet months. Every ERG has year-round programming ideas, so belonging doesn't stop when the heritage month ends.
Awareness Tells. Activation Invites.
Most cultural programming stops at awareness: a post, a fact, a link to learn more. Awareness matters. It's the foundation.
But awareness is something people read. Activation is something people do together.
| Awareness | Activation | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Sharing history, stories, and facts | A shared experience people take part in |
| Where it lives | Newsletter, Slack, intranet | Live event, team ritual, hands-on moment |
| What people do | Read, react, scroll | Taste, make, play, learn, give |
| What it builds | Knowledge | Connection and belonging |
The strongest heritage months use both. Awareness tells people why the month matters. Activation gives them a reason to show up and a memory to take with them.

An activation ideas bank is a curated library of cultural celebration ideas your team can pull from all year. Each idea is tagged by month or moment, format, budget, and team setup (in-person, remote, or hybrid).
Instead of reinventing the wheel every time a heritage month comes around, you open the bank, pick the format that fits, and start planning.
It solves the three problems that sink most cultural programming:
- The last-minute scramble. Ideas are ready weeks ahead, not the morning of.
- The same-event-every-year rut. A deep bank keeps your calendar fresh.
- The uneven calendar. Big months get attention while smaller communities get skipped. A bank makes the gaps visible.
It's the same thinking behind our Ritual Ideas Bank: culture is built through moments you can repeat, not one big event.
The 5 Activation Formats (Mix Them All Year)
Every great cultural celebration fits into one of five formats. Rotate through them and your calendar never feels repetitive, because each format reaches different people in a different way.
1. Learn: Hear It From the Source
Expert-led sessions that explore history, traditions, and lived experience.
- A hosted cultural class or workshop led by a member of the community
- A live virtual tour of a festival, neighborhood, or historic site
- A fireside chat with an ERG member or invited speaker
- A "history you didn't learn in school" lunch-and-learn
Best for: heritage months with deep history to share, and teams that want substance over spectacle.
2. Taste: Gather Around Food
Food is the fastest path to connection. It's also the easiest format to get wrong if it's the only thing you do.
- A cooking class featuring a traditional dish, with the story behind it
- A team recipe swap where members share a family dish and its meaning
- A tasting box from community-owned brands, shipped to remote teammates
- A potluck with a short "why this dish matters to me" card at each plate
Best for: hybrid and remote teams who need a shared, sensory moment.
3. Create: Make Something Together
Hands-on activities rooted in a culture's art, craft, or design traditions.
- A craft workshop tied to a celebration (lanterns, rangoli, papel picado, beadwork)
- A collaborative playlist of music from the culture being celebrated
- A community mural, digital mood board, or shared photo wall
Best for: creative teams, and anyone who learns by doing.
4. Play: Learn Through Games
Games lower the stakes and get people talking.
- Custom trivia built around the month's history, leaders, and traditions
- Traditional games from the culture, explained and played together
- A month-long "fact of the week" challenge with a small prize
Best for: large or distributed teams, and colleagues who are newer to the topic.
5. Give: Celebrate With Impact
Turn celebration into contribution.
- Volunteer with or donate to a community organization the ERG chooses
- Shop and gift from businesses owned by members of the community
- Run a giving challenge where participation unlocks a company donation
Best for: values-driven teams, and closing out a month with meaning.
Pro tip: for any big month, pair two formats. A Learn session in week one and a Taste or Play moment in week three gives people two ways in, and gives your month a real arc.
The Ideas Bank: Month-by-Month Activations

Pick the Right Activation for Your Budget and Team
Great cultural programming isn't about spend. It's about fit.
Use this to match any idea from the bank to your reality.
| Budget | In-office | Remote or global | Hybrid |
|---|---|---|---|
| $0 | Potluck with "why this dish matters" cards | Fact-of-the-week Slack challenge or collaborative playlist | Member storytelling session streamed from the office |
| Small ($10–$40 per person) | Themed snack spread from community-owned brands | Tasting box shipped to every home | Same box in-office and at home, opened together on one call |
| Mid ($40–$100 per person) | Hosted cooking or craft workshop | Live virtual class or tour with an expert host | Virtual class with in-office watch party |
| Signature ($100+ per person) | Multi-part celebration week with a speaker | Kit-based experience plus gifts from community-owned shops | Hosted event plus recipient-choice gift shop |
Three quick rules for global teams:
- Rotate time zones. Run the session twice, or record it, so nobody is always the one dialing in at midnight.
- Ship local, not international. Gifts and tasting boxes fulfilled in-country arrive faster and skip surprise customs fees.
- Celebrate globally relevant moments. Lunar New Year, Diwali, and Eid matter to colleagues far beyond the U.S. calendar.
For more on this, see Confetti's playbook for planning events for international teams.
Your 6-Week Planning Timeline
The biggest mistake in cultural programming is starting too late. Hosted experiences book up, gifts need shipping time, and storytellers need room to say yes.
Start six weeks out.
Week -6: Choose and partner
- Pick your moment and confirm the dates
- Bring in the ERG or community members as co-planners, not reviewers
- Browse the Cultural Planning guide together and shortlist 2–3 ideas
Week -5: Lock the format and budget
- Pick your two formats (for example, Learn + Taste)
- Confirm budget and headcount, including remote teammates
- Request your experience or host date. Peak months fill early.
Week -4: Book and order
- Book the host, speaker, or class
- Order gifts or tasting boxes. Global shipping needs extra lead time.
- Ask an executive sponsor to open the event or share the invite
Week -3: Build the run of show
- Write a simple agenda: welcome, why this moment matters, the activity, a closing reflection
- Plan accessibility: captions, dietary options, time-zone coverage
Week -2: Promote
- Send the invite with a clear "why it matters" line
- Pair it with awareness content (see our companion playbook on heritage month awareness campaigns)
Week -1: Confirm and prep
- Send reminders and any kit instructions
- Do a quick tech check with the host and co-planners
The month itself: Celebrate, then close the loop
- Run the activation
- Share photos, quotes, and a thank-you to everyone who planned it
- Send a two-question pulse survey and log what to repeat next year
Plan the next one now. Moments early in a month need planning before that month starts. If Lunar New Year or Black History Month is on your list, start in December, not February.
Celebrate With Care: 7 Mistakes to Avoid
Cultural celebrations build belonging when they're done with care. Done carelessly, they do the opposite. Watch for these:
- Planning about a community without planning with it. Co-plan with the ERG or community members from week one.
- Costumes and caricatures. Celebrate traditions through learning, food, art, and stories, never by dressing up as a culture.
- Food-only programming. A themed lunch is a great start. Pair it with a story, a host, or a moment of learning so it means something.
- Flattening. "Asian" or "Hispanic" covers dozens of cultures. Name specific countries, nations, and traditions.
- Asking the same people every year. Spread the work and the spotlight. Compensate or recognize the volunteers who make it happen.
- Scheduling over the moment. Don't book a lunch event during Ramadan or an all-hands on a major religious holiday. Check the guide's Interfaith/Multifaith list (49 holidays across eight faiths, plus cross-cultural celebrations) first.
- One and done. A single event in a heritage month and silence the other eleven months reads as a checkbox. Keep the bank active all year.
How to Measure Success
You don't need a dashboard. Track a handful of signals and share them with your executive sponsor:
- Participation: attendance as a share of invites, and how many first-time attendees joined
- Reach: how many teams, offices, and time zones took part
- Sentiment: a two-question pulse: "Did you learn something new?" and "Do you feel more connected to your colleagues?"
- Co-planner experience: ask the ERG how the partnership felt, and what to change next time
- Calendar balance: at year-end, check which communities got a meaningful moment and which didn't
A one-slide recap with a few photos and quotes turns a great celebration into the case for next year's budget.

Cultural celebrations aren't about filling a calendar slot.
They're about giving people a reason to show up, learn something real, and see the colleagues beside them a little more fully.
You don't need a giant budget. You need a bank of good ideas, the right partners at the table, and a plan that starts early.
