What are Forest Gardens and why are they effective?

Forest Gardens are a combination of trees, shrubs, fruits, vegetables, and grains, strategically planted to support one another, the land, and farmers. Instead of the usual practice of monocropping (planting and harvesting one crop), Forest Gardens include a diverse array of species, which allows farmers to improve their nutrition and stabilize their income.

In addition, Forest Gardens optimize space used in an area, increasing the quality and frequency of harvests so that the farmer can experience the most bountiful and sustainable growing seasons.

TREES currently has plant donation projects in Kenya, Mali, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda, Cameroon, Chad, Gambia, and The Central African Republic.

TREES focuses its work in sub-Saharan Africa because of the climate, the need, and the potential. Using agroforestry and sustainable farming practices, they aim to provide effective solutions to hunger, poverty, and environmental degradation.

Can you tell me more about the organization

[Trees for the Future](https://trees.org/our-work/) (TREES) is currently working with thousands of farming families across nine countries. Over the past 30 years, they have worked around the globe, pivoting their focus to sub-Saharan Africa in 2014, where climatic and economic challenges were most pressing and they could make the greatest impact.

Using the Forest Garden Approach in semi-arid countries like Senegal, they've proven that agroforestry is a solution to each of these challenges, effectively reducing hunger and poverty while restoring degraded land from decades of unsustainable agriculture practices.
