Virtual Understanding Juneteenth
Celebrate freedom

Juneteenth marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans on June 19, 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to ensure that all enslaved people were freed. In 2021, Juneteenth became an official federal holiday.
Join us in a celebration of African American culture and learn about the history of Juneteenth in a lecture-style setting. Through a collection of slides and images, participants will explore:
- The laws and proclamations that surrounded the freeing of enslaved people in America
- Personal stories and narratives from those who were last to receive news of emancipation
- How Juneteenth has been commemorated over the years
- Tips and insight on how to celebrate Juneteenth today
This class includes Q&A opportunities, giving participants the chance to ask more about Juneteenth. Our instructor will also provide educational resources and short, interactive activities to test your knowledge!
